Toronto Criminal Courts, Ontario

We estimated the demand for criminal court facilities in the Toronto region over a 25-year horizon. Our work involved review of previous forecasts, comparison of population projections, examination of current courtroom utilization, and alternative future demand scenarios. We worked with a regional stakeholder committee to determine the most likely estimate of future need for criminal court facilities in the Toronto area. We also estimated the distribution of long-term demand into five service areas in Toronto. We developed a facilities program for the first of an anticipated series of projects — a new 22-courtroom Toronto West Criminal Courthouse. This new courthouse includes two major crimes courtrooms for high security trials involving multiple accused. Completed in 2007.
