Long-Range Facilities Plan, School District 5, BC
School District 5 (Southeast Kootenay)
We updated previous enrolment forecasts and conducted a review of capacity utilization for a rural school district comprising several communities with various prospects for growth. We studied the capacity and condition of the existing facilities and formulated a plan to improve utilization. We assessed the capital and operational cost implications of the emerging facilities plan. The proposed district plan would improve utilization, significantly improve the overall quality of facilities, reduce operating costs (by nearly $2.3 million annually), and migrate to a consistent senior middle grade configuration. The estimated initial capital costs of about $35 million would be more than offset by the sale of surplus assets and the avoided facility upgrading costs. Completed in 2008.
